What does it take for a music magazine to be successful in the music press today?

In order for a music magazine to be successful it has to contain certain aspects. Music is constantly changing, which means for the magazine to be successful on the front cover there has to be a current, popular artist. This will attract music lovers and result in them buying the magazine. The colours on the magazine have to be attractive which will hook readers.

Each magazine needs to have a unique selling point. There should always be a certain part of the magazine which makes it different to any other music magazine. For example, Smash Hits used to write song lyric cards which made people buy their magazine. Top of the Pops use freebies to make people buy the magazine as it proved to be extremely popular with the young female target audience.

Amongst a female audience, the music magazine would have to not only be about music, but have gossip related articles as that it what girls like to read about. So music magazines have to be created to fit their specific target audience. Certain music magazines only focus on music related topics, and avoid talking about gossip as that is what their audience likes.

Aswell as music changing, social media is changing too. The younger generation are more up to date with new technology. Therefore, in order for a music magazine to be successful, they have to be linked to social networking sites. For example, twitter, facebook etc.

An online medium will be needed for it to be successful. As I mentioned before, as young people today are up to date with new technology. Many people own a smart phone and therefore have access to internet all the time. More people read things online, than buying printed copies. Online mediums save time going to the shops to buy a magazine, are more eco friendly and are much cheaper.

If a magazine has its own radio station, people are more likely to find out about it and will gain more readers.
